In ancient times when the Zoroastrian religion was prevalent in Iran, fire temples were places of worship and gathering for the followers of this religion. Throughout Iran, fire temples from that era remain, and some of them are still active in Zoroastrian-populated areas.
In the city of Amol, one of these fire temples remains and has now become one of the tourist attractions of Amol.
The Amol Fire Temple is a quadrangular building with Sassanid-era architecture. Later, when the fire temple was no longer in use, it became a burial place for Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Mahmoud Amoli, an Iranian physician and philosopher.
