Description

Espi Mazgat consists of two words: "Espi" in the Talysh language meaning white, and "Mazgat" in the Avestan language meaning "mosque." This building was an old and large fire temple that was converted into a mosque after the advent of Islam, probably after the third century AH, and was used for a long time. The age of this building, according to the Kufic inscription and the pottery found, dates back to the Seljuk period. It was made with goat milk and bricks, plastered with lime, and decorated. Information obtained from the architectural style and the existence of pottery related to the Ilkhanid era indicates that this mosque is at least 800 years old. Some narratives suggest that the mosque building dates back to the Sasanian period. Currently, this building has been abandoned and is breathing its last breaths, and new evidence also shows that excavations have been carried out around this building to find treasure. This building is located 80 kilometers west of Rasht city and 22 kilometers south of Talesh city, in the Dinachal Pareh Sar rural district on the western bank of the Dinachal river.
