Description

Gerdan Castle in Rudsar is one of the historical and cultural monuments of Gilan Province.

This castle is located one kilometer from the village of Tol Lat and at an altitude of 181 meters above sea level. Due to its special geographical location, this castle has had a special strategic importance and has been used during different historical periods.

History of Gerdan Castle

Rudsar dates back to the pre-Seljuk period. Some historical sources attribute the age of this castle to the Seljuk era, but considering the surrounding moats and architectural structure, it seems that this building was constructed before the Seljuk period. Throughout its history, Gerdan Castle has played an important role in defending the region and is recognized as one of the earliest military buildings in Gilan Province.

Architecture of Gerdan Castle

The architecture of Gerdan Castle in Rudsar is of a special style using traditional materials such as stone and sarooj (a type of mortar). This castle has a stone masonry structure and was probably built in three floors. The main entrance of the castle opens to the south towards the river and the road, indicating its strategic importance in the past.

Gerdan Castle probably had three floors, each designed for a specific purpose. The first floor was for military and defensive activities, the second floor served as living quarters and food storage, and the third floor was used as a watchtower for monitoring the area.

In recent years, archaeologists have conducted various excavations in the Gerdan Castle area, yielding interesting results. One of the most important discoveries is a unique collective grave located 250 meters northeast of the castle overlooking the Keshkooh River. This grave is significant due to the presence of four skeletons that have almost deteriorated because of high humidity.

Discovery of the collective grave

In the sixth trench, archaeologists discovered an ancient grave that was probably the family tomb of an important person. The bronze and pottery objects found in this grave indicate the affluent life and high social status of its owners.

Objects found from the excavations

Among the objects found in this grave is a double-edged axe also used as a pickaxe, found at the entrance of the grave. These objects demonstrate the technology and art of the era in which Gerdan Castle was built and used.
