Description

The cemetery and holy shrine of Ibn Babawayh is the first cemetery of the city of Rey and the second cemetery of Tehran, where many of Iran's celebrities, including Gholamreza Takhti, are buried. The name of this cemetery is derived from the name of Muhammad ibn Babawayh Qummi, known as Sheikh Saduq, one of the Shia jurists and scholars who is buried in this cemetery. According to reports and historical documents, before the time of Naser al-Din Shah, the Ibn Babawayh cemetery was a very large field and garden, but following the discovery of a well-preserved corpse of a person in a crypt beneath that garden and the finding of a stone inside the crypt that clearly indicated the body was that of Sheikh Saduq, who died more than 800 years ago, the Sheikh Saduq shrine was built on that grave. According to some experts, the original structure of the Ibn Babawayh cemetery dates back to the Samanid era and was later destroyed by floods. The original mausoleum of Sheikh Saduq was also destroyed several times over time due to the Mongol invasions, the wars of the Khwarazmshahs and Timurids, and various other incidents.

After the reconstruction of the Sheikh Saduq shrine, many people were buried around it, and large and magnificent tombs were also built around it. Both Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Mohammad Mosaddegh had also wished to be buried in Ibn Babawayh.
