“Qibla Grand Mosque” (Old Mosque) was one of the most beautiful mosques of Kookherd. This mosque is located in the “Qibla” neighborhood, therefore it is called Qibla Mosque. It was built in the year 1310 AH. The cost of the mosque at that time was one thousand (1000) tomans. All the people of Kookherd, men and women, participated in building this mosque, each according to their ability. Those who could not pay money brought materials such as stone, wood, water, and clay. Women were also involved in this great work; at nights when the men were not at work, they went and brought stones from the Shamo River (the name of a seasonal river northwest of Kookherd). These women carried stones on their heads and brought them for the construction of the mosque. In the morning, when the men came to work, they used those stones. All the people of Kookherd, men and women, shared in building this mosque.
The master builder who constructed this mosque was named (Architect Haji Molla Mohammad Sharif Kazem), and the first imam of the mosque and Friday and congregational prayers was (Haji Molla Mostafa Kookherdi).
Unfortunately, this historic mosque was destroyed in the year 1412 AH, 102 years after its construction, and that Islamic treasure and historic teacher of Kookherd was lost. In its place, the current Grand Mosque of Kookherd was built.
