The yakhchals of Khaf are another marvel of Iranian architecture that demonstrate the advanced knowledge and technology of the Iranians in the past. These massive, dome-shaped structures were used to store ice during the hot season. Yakhchals were usually built in winter and on cold nights. Water was collected in large pools and after freezing, it was transferred into the yakhchal well. Then the opening of the yakhchal was covered with a layer of straw and clay to keep the ice intact until the warm season.
Importance of yakhchals:
Yakhchals played an important role in people's lives in the past. The ice from these yakhchals was used to keep food and drinks cool and also for medical purposes.
